An introduction to
The Breathe London Network

The Breathe London Network is run by the Environmental Research Group at Imperial College London, the same group that runs the London Air Quality Network. The group combines air pollution science, toxicology and epidemiology to determine the impacts of air pollution on health and has over 20 years of experience running large urban air quality monitoring networks.

The Breathe London Network

The Breathe Network complements the air monitoring network that local or central government runs which consists of larger, very expensive and accurate reference grade analysers which require roadside infrastructure to house them.

The Breathe London network does this by providing affordable, easy-to-install and maintain air quality sensors to communities. The small sensors measure PM2.5 and NO2, but are not as accurate as reference-grade analysers. They become valuable when combining their data with the London Air reference network.

Our Clean Air Bayswater application was one of 10 successful candidates from 43 submissions to the London Breathe Programme. The application was assessed by their independent panel, which included members from a diverse group of health, social, and charitable organisations including Global Action Plan, Jack Petchey Foundation, Impact on Urban Health, Greener Together and Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation.

"Air pollution is a deadly problem in cities all over the world, and technology is giving us new ways to measure it and understand its effects. By putting that technology in the hands of communities, this partnership will empower people to push for smart policies and give elected leaders the data they need to save lives in London. It will also encourage other cities to act - and it's a great example of how collaboration can accelerate progress on the big challenges we face. Sadiq Khan has shown strong leadership on this critical issue and we're looking forward to working together on this new effort."
